Day 2 in Paliku

I was pretty horribly lazy. And a bit sore. I enjoyed a day sitting around watching the day go by.

Hike to Paliku

We started a hike from the 10,000ft summit down to the ocean around 11am.... Down to Paliku cabin today, the ocean two days later. May my knees forgive me someday.

Akamai Workforce Initiative Retreat

I got to Lahaina early yesterday to be in a retreat designed to engage a bunch of communities working on re-designing the "Professional Development Program", create the new Maui Community College 4 year BS program, and on how to integrate teaching teams in to lab courses run by the PDP.... I'm on the hook to develop / teach some upper level courses as part of the new 4-year program. Teaching is time consuming..... especially when trying to make a course relevant, fit the local workforce, address under-represented minority / language issues and teach processes and attitudes (not just content).

Wollowing....

I just basically realized that I spent a day chasing down a stupid mistake. I hate it when that happens. The file ordering in some system was unexpected so I thought that a data processing program was somehow broken.... And I wasted other peoples time. I learned a lot in the process but it wasn't time well spent. So... summary point is that I should drink less coffee. Here's a squiggle to take my mind off the day. At least it's a really interesting squiggle showing that this star is interesting....



And in a light note - I just love getting these emails from random people who want to share their crazy theories with people. This "mystery space mirror" guy spams the IfA every month or three with something like this:


It should remember that Sun is the centre of our life rather it may be said that sun is the basic source of our life. Living inside the solar system we can not see anything beyond 150 million kilometer in the darken part of earth, but for other reasons we have been watching hundred of light years away various space objects and mysteries i.e. asteroids, milky ways, galaxies, supernovas, white dwarfs, nebulas, black holes, extra solar systems etc. that is other wise called at “mysteries of space mirror” and it can prove that sun is the only luminous body and only star in the total universe.

Sunday Sailing

The waves were really calm so we went way out.... Molokai was really easy to see and we had to be at least a few miles off shore. We had a few false alarms on the fising pole. No sashimi yet.

A Telescope in Twilight

The twilight pictures of AEOS came out fantastic....

NIR Milky Way

This last few days turned in to a somewhat random observing run. I got to sneak away for an hour in between twilight calibrations and some AEOS time to take a quick picture of the milky way with no moonlight in the NIR.... 40 minute exposure, 24mm f/2.8. Not bad.



And a 30min 50mm f/1.2 shot with the pentax, just because.....

Swindle & Observing

Two days on the mountain.... with Thomas Ryan Swindle not the 3rd. Tons of hardware in addition to a few hours here and there of good old fashioned stellar spectropolarimetry. In addition to an hour with the security people.

I'm back at the data reduction game again.... It's been a nice break from screwdrivers and optical alignment.

Gliding Sacred Falls

Last week, I got a chance to go glide the Ko'olau range with Steve. I truely love it over there.... I finally got around to photoshopping all the images. Shooting raw really does make a lot of good color possible. We got to circle over a chopper too.....

Curvature AO Again...

Seems like I've had my head full of bendy mirrors and electronics this week. I spent Thursday on Maui laying things out for the AO system to be ready to head up to the summit. It's been a full week....

Pictures Website Massively Updated

I've finally finished redoing my pictures website. It's nothing terribly major, but I've redone many of the albums to include more pictures, I've added the spring and fall 2009, added a bunch of Maui pictures and cleared up the formatting. Enjoy!
