MCC Lab Course

Another day but I think this one was the most fun - the students got to 'play with markers' and other goodies to make a model for a ccd. I know, what are markers doing at the college level? It's amazing what content you can teach and what mental processes you can practice using simple materials if the context is right and the engineering challenge is designed properly.

My last day with Dad

Today was my last full day with my dad. I had to hang so we went to the airfield for the morning then spent the afternoon doing the usual pack & hang thing. That guy can drink some scotch.... I had to get ready for another day at MCC so I (and the other friends over who work for a living!) couldn't participate.

MCC Teaching Consultant

After a Saturday snorkel (and some afternoon hang time with a few) I needed a chill Sunday. Dad and I spent the day saying G'bye to Bri then taking care of things. I went early Monday morning to Maui for the day as a 'teaching consultant' for a team of grads participating in the development program. It was neat to come in to a newly designed lab and to try to see it functioning from the outside. I'm part-time helping with the development of the 4-year electrical / computing degree at MCC and seeing how a 'teaching team' interacts with a classrooom was an eye-opening experience.

A Day Hike

We hiked down to Paliku. While Bri Budda'd and Dad Zen'd, I hiked up the ridge line. Then the crusty old nene chased his competition around while we hunted for owl shots.

Haleakala Crater Hike - Day 1

After catching some night time pics, we caught a 'nap' and headed down 3000ft to Kapalaoa over 6 miles. Cruisy afternoon hike with some good cut-throat euchre to top it off. Tequilla too....

Haleakala Stars

In to the crater tomorrow morning, but up late taking pictures anyways....

HiVIS Dewar

Tore this thing apart on Maui today.. This new detector was supposed to be ready a month ago but we've had two dead chillers. Broken hardware irritates.

Sailing

Dad's wish was to get out on a boat....

Then Brian, in all his wisdom, suggested the forecastle.... Here he is suggesting.
So, we go out and everything looks groovy.Liz then joins us, then the water and waves soak us for half an hour on a roller-coaster ride.

Mike Robinson

Go figure - the one and only time in six years that dad comes out (and I fly him out....) his best friends brother is staying in Waikiki....

Aerobatic Training!

We all went up to the north shore, first to Waimea to jump off the rock then over to the airfield. I took an aerobatic lesson - a tow to 4000 for a run, then we thermaled up from 1500 to 4500 and did another run. Loops, rolls, stall turns and inverted flight mainly.... It was a good time. Then I flew Brian, Dad, Bryan, Bradley and Veronica up for rides.

Brian in the Breezy!
The Old Man and the Sea....
The MDM Fox 1 Unlimited Acrobatic Glider!

Another Dave shot a video in the fox down at Dillingham..... go You Tube!

To top it all off, Brian hiked up Kealia and I buzzed him a bunch of times with Bradley and Veronica.

Dad's Night Shots

While I was observing, dad was out taking some night time pictures and exploring how my cameras work.... Long exposures are pretty cool huh?

IR Imaging

Dad and I came over to Maui to do some IR imaging with the slit viewer camera. It was a good test of my new-found IR skills and there was a ton of pressure. I had to rip the shutter out of the Vis side and install it on short notice.... Had it working in 10 minutes!
